On July 1st, the State of Nuevo Leon, México, woke up devastated by hurricane Alex brutal force. Hurricane Alex was the first tropical storm that hit the north of the country on 2010. It’s strength and devastation became a catastrophe in the State of Nuevo Leon. Thousands of people lost their homes and entire cities were under water. Nobody was prepared for what happened next, as it kept raining. Rivers overflowed causing rescuers to take longer than expected to help those stuck in high risk zones.

These images are from Lianne Milton’s ongoing portrait series on cockfighters. These portraits were photographed earlier this year in little towns just outside of San Miguel de Allende, a popular city for expats, artists, and the wealthy from Mexico City. Ironworkers here raise roosters to fight, while local police try to clampdown on the gambling from clandestine cockfighting. Cockfighting is legal in Mexico and popular throughout the country, but gambling during cockfights is illegal.

Images taken by James Pomerantz in Mexico at a cenote, a natural sinkhole that connects to a subterranean body of water. For the Mayans, the cenotes were sources of fresh water and were considered portals to the afterlife. Today they are frequented by tourists and locals who bathe in the cool water.
“The photographs were all made with a large format camera on an elevated ledge about 40 feet above the water,” Pomerantz says. (more…)
