This photograph, entitled Arctic I, 2009, is part of the show Arctic at Heskin Contemporary’s project room, at 443 West 37th Street, New York. The show runs February 18 – March 27, 2010. Myriam Babin will be showing photographs taken while sailing up the coast of Norway into the Arctic circle to the Svalbard Islands. The opening reception will take place on February 18, 6-9pm.

Chewing the addictive mixture of areca nut and betel leaf is a custom which dates back thousands of years from South Asia to the Pacific. In Taiwan, the traders started to hire beautiful young women in sexy outfits, called betel nut beauties, in order to attract customers.

These images are part of a larger fine art series which Maybin has made of herself and her daughter combined as one. This particular series is photographed at night while Maybin’s daughter is asleep; these photographs of her daughter’s head and her own body are combined to make a chimera of persons. This discussion surrounds the topic of identity as a woman, mother and daughter.
