A queen’s pet gazelle was readied for eternity with the same lavish care as a member of the royal family. In fine, blue-trimmed bandages and a custom-made wooden coffin, it accompanied its owner to the grave in about 945 B.C.

The image comes from a catalogue for the Italian fashion brand Bacon titled “Lost in Wonderland.” It was shot in an old amusement park outside Milan. Nicola Carignani is based in Milan and often travels to the U.S., where he is working on a book project called “Innocence.” Images from his “Innocence” portfolio are on his Web site.
