Schreiber, a German photographer, shoots daylight photographs with long exposures—in this case, 2 seconds. Schreiber used a Nikon D300 with a Nikon VR 18-200 lens, set with the focal length at 60 mm. Camera settings: ISO 100, aperture 32.0. He also used a grey filter that increases the exposure time by 6 apertures.

Mammoth Snowstorm

MAMMOTH-6995-C2© Bruce Benedict

Photographed at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, California.

Bruce Benedict explains that his image is a composite of two shots made with a Canon 5D Mark II, 16mm lens, and tripod.
Long Exposure: 15 sec., f4.0, ISO 50.
Exposure for flakes: 5 sec., f4.0, ISO 50, with a flash firing to capture the flakes.
Benedict used Photoshop to lift the flakes out of one shot and add them to the long exposure and soften the background a bit. He adds:

“The Mammoth is a statue at the base of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area in Mammoth Lakes, California.  I made the image while spending the week skiing there with my family in April.  I badly underestimated how quickly fingers freeze in a wet snowstorm at night, even in April!  I thought I’d just make a quick snap or two, and then got rather carried away – finally leaving when I got too cold to continue.”

RSVP

Earlier this week Michael Mazzeo Gallery launched RSVP, an online exhibition space Mazzeo created to give exhibition and print sales opportunities to a greater number of photographers than he can feature in his physical gallery. RSVP shows are curated through an open call for work based on a particular theme. Submissions and inclusion in the exhibitions and print-on-demand catalogues are free, and artists who sell prints through RSVP receive 70 percent of sales. Says Mazzeo, “I am not asking photographers to produce additional, cheaper editions of their work to sell at discounted prices. I’m only interested in getting them the fair market price for their existing editioned prints.” The initial show, Arbor, features work by 52 artists, including Richard Renaldi, Yong Hee Kim, Christopher Rauschenberg, Karen Glaser, Amanda Friedman and Ian Aleksander Adams. To view the exhibition click here. For more information or to submit work for future RSVP shows, visit Mazzeo’s blog.
