On July 1st, the State of Nuevo Leon, México, woke up devastated by hurricane Alex brutal force. Hurricane Alex was the first tropical storm that hit the north of the country on 2010. It’s strength and devastation became a catastrophe in the State of Nuevo Leon. Thousands of people lost their homes and entire cities were under water. Nobody was prepared for what happened next, as it kept raining. Rivers overflowed causing rescuers to take longer than expected to help those stuck in high risk zones.

“I’ve been wanting to shoot some personal work of drag racing, and I was lucky enough to land a couple media passes for a big event at the local strip a few weeks ago. My friend Steve and I donned green photo vests, doubled up on the ear protection, and hauled the Profoto kit to the starting line to go breathe some nitro fuel vapors, eat tiny bits of rubber, and witness massive amounts of fuel consumption. (About 30 gallons in 7 seconds for the jet cars)
I never have seen or heard anything like this before, let alone being five feet away from some truly terrifying cars. When the first nitro dragster took off, I nearly threw my camera down and ran away, screaming like a little girl. I thought I was having a heart attack.
The jet cars are equally ridiculous, and there is no way to really explain the sheer insanity of strapping four wheels and a seat to a JET ENGINE.” To see more of Jamie Kripke’s work click here

Michael Forster Rothbart spent two years living among Chernobyl survivors in Ukraine, photographing daily life.
“I discovered how often photojournalists distort Chernobyl. They visit briefly, expecting danger and despair, and come away with photos of deformed children and abandoned buildings,” he writes. “I wanted to understand how people are really living here, a generation after the accident.”
He followed 12 families for a year and conducted over 100 interviews of evacuees, veterans and people still working at the Chernobyl plant.

Crew members brace themselves on the bow of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society ship, MV Steve Irwin, as it plunges through Antarctic swells. Adam Lau, a student from San Francisco State University, documented the ship and it’s crew as they pursued and clashed with Japanese whaling vessels. Such ships are accused of hunting commercially under the guise of “scientific research.” While Sea Shepherd claims to be non-violent, its aggressive tactics have provoked criticism from other groups, making it the black sheep of the conservation movement.
Lau’s series is included in the PDN Photo Annual 2010 online gallery. The MV Steve Irwin and it’s crew are also the subject of the Animal Planet series Whale Wars.
