Above: A young migrant is trying to get himself under the axle of a truck going to Italy through the harbor of Patras, Greece in October of 2010.

Between 100,000 and 150,000 newcomers arrive in Greece every year and according to Frontex 75% of migrants entering Europe come through Greece. To continue the journey through Europe, migrants have to reach Patras, a harbour on the West coast of Greece which can turn out to be a window towards Italy. Hundreds of migrants are still here, some of them for 2 years, in the hope of reaching Italy illegally. In Patras the living conditions are extremely difficult for most sleep in the streets and parks near the harbor. On a daily basis they are trying to enter the harbor by jumping on a ferry going to Italy, or riding directly under the axle of a truck departing on the same ferry. Everyday ferries, from Italy to Patras, disembark migrants who get caught after spending 48hours in the ferry lying under a truck, without food or water. Patras is the dead end of the European migration policy.- Depardon.

Sturgis, a prairie town on the westernmost edge of South Dakota, claims only 6,000 permanent residents… The town swells to nearly a half million for the first week of August every summer during the famous motorcycle rally. At the end of the 2008 rally, 66 marriage licenses had been issued, 3 rally-related deaths occurred, millions of t-shirts had been sold, the South Dakota economy claimed $10.5 million in rally-related sales, and 543 tons of garbage were hauled away. These are just a few faces of another Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in America’s heartland. To see more of Reed Young’s work click here.

On July 1st, the State of Nuevo Leon, México, woke up devastated by hurricane Alex brutal force. Hurricane Alex was the first tropical storm that hit the north of the country on 2010. It’s strength and devastation became a catastrophe in the State of Nuevo Leon. Thousands of people lost their homes and entire cities were under water. Nobody was prepared for what happened next, as it kept raining. Rivers overflowed causing rescuers to take longer than expected to help those stuck in high risk zones.

“I’ve been wanting to shoot some personal work of drag racing, and I was lucky enough to land a couple media passes for a big event at the local strip a few weeks ago. My friend Steve and I donned green photo vests, doubled up on the ear protection, and hauled the Profoto kit to the starting line to go breathe some nitro fuel vapors, eat tiny bits of rubber, and witness massive amounts of fuel consumption. (About 30 gallons in 7 seconds for the jet cars)

I never have seen or heard anything like this before, let alone being five feet away from some truly terrifying cars. When the first nitro dragster took off, I nearly threw my camera down and ran away, screaming like a little girl. I thought I was having a heart attack.

The jet cars are equally ridiculous, and there is no way to really explain the sheer insanity of strapping four wheels and a seat to a JET ENGINE.” To see more of Jamie Kripke’s work click here
