Rob Tringali is a freelance photographer who has specialized in sports for over 20 years. He photographed the last 22 Super Bowls, 14 World Series and numerous Olympic games as well as major golf and tennis championships, and World Cup soccer. Tringali’s clients often hire him to not only get the winning shot, but also capture the spirit of the moment through a unique perspective.

Tringali says, “I love shooting sports for a variety of reasons: I appreciate the competition and what an athlete or team has to endure to become the best, how they push themselves to limits most people couldn’t grasp. Capturing the essence of sport from such a close proximity never gets old. I’ve escaped near misses on NFL sidelines, have had hockey pucks and baseballs whiz by my head at ridiculous speeds, climbed with bulky, heavy lenses up snowy mountains—all experiences I would never trade.”

British photographer, Ben Roberts’s latest series “Occupied Spaces” shows an intimate look at the private spaces of occupiers at the protest camp outside of St Paul’s Cathedral in central London. The project began in response to stories Roberts heard in the mainstream media claiming that “thermal imaging” proved only 10 percent of the 250 tents in St. Paul’s Square were being inhabited overnight. Skeptical of these claims, Roberts set out to record the daily life of an occupier without, as he says, “resorting to the standard photographic language of ‘protest photography.’ The traces of activity and inhabitance in these photographs serve as a document of the intense utilisation of a limited space by a large number of both permanent and temporary residents.” Roberts’s series was recently featured on the BBC.

The six-month anniversary of the March 11 tsunami that struck northeastern Japan came and went with little attention in the Western press. But New York-based photographer Jake Price, who has spent a total of ten weeks in Tōhoku since March, believes the environmental devastation the disaster wrought will be a story for a long time to come. While the media has focused on nuclear contamination, he says, “Walking past overturned boats, cars, trucks, I realized that their oil, gas and other chemicals emptied into the soil and groundwater.” He photographed mounds made from the bulldozed debris of entire towns, which contain insulation, fiberglas and chemical contaminants.

The salt water and oil that washed into farms has made the land unusable for five years or more. ”Many elderly farmers will never see growth on their land again. Still they work diligently to hand it off to future generations, an issue that is filled with uncertainty because so many young people have left for the big cities.”

Price shot many still images, video and audio in the region, and the BBC showed some of his images in an audio slide show.

Of the limited press attention paid to the crisis, Price notes, “I think the perception … is that the Japanese have everything figured out because it is such an orderly society. But that is simplistic at best. People are still coping with enormous stress and loneliness after losing everything.”

Though assignments to cover the story are rare, Price is planning to return to the region soon. “The more I get to know about Tōhoku the more interested I become.” He wants to donate his images to libraries and community centers to help the region begin restoring the visual record lost in the tsunami.

In 2009, Mathias Braschler and Monika Fischer traveled to sixteen countries around the world, taking photographs of and conducting interviews with people whose existence is threatened by the consequences of climate change. One of the greatest floods in the history of his region destroyed the home and business owned by Yang Gengbao and his wife in the Chinese province of Guangxi. The drying up of Lake Chad means that Abakar Maydocou Mahamat can no longer earn his livelihood as a fisherman. Margaret Aliurtuq Nickerson from western Alaska will soon have to leave her village, Newtok, since the ground is thawing, causing homes and streets to sink. Braschler and Fischer’s new book, The Human Face of Climate Change published by Hatje Cantz, will be released this Fall in the US. The project will also travel in exhibition form to the Bermuda National Gallery in Hamilton, Bermuda and Coalmine Fotogalerie in Winterthur, Switzerland.

During the nine days of campaigning in the lead up to Singapore’s historic general elections on May 7, photographer Darren Soh documented several rallies using the technique of a landscape photographer.

Using a borrowed Leica S2, Soh photographed the rallies, then stitched images together to create final files that are roughly 1GB.

“The most obvious way of photographing an election campaign is to show people’s faces and emotions, and the candidates up-close,” Soh, who is based in Singapore, explains. “I wanted to show the scale of these rallies.”

As many as 50,000 people were reported to have turned out for some of the rallies that preceded the election, which saw the ruling People’s Action Party lose seats in a parliament it has dominated since the city-state’s independence in 1956. Though the opposition Workers’ Party won only six of the 87 parliamentary seats, they made a strong enough showing that Singapore’s founder, Lee Kuan Yew, and another ex-prime minister resigned from Singapore’s cabinet earlier this week, ceding control of their party to younger members who they feel are more in tune with the concerns of Singapore’s people.

Lunchtime Rally, People’s Action Party, 3rd May, 2011

“Singaporeans are generally known to be apolitical—if it doesn’t rock their boat they’re happy to carry on their lives,” Soh explains. “In the nine days of campaigning the turnout at these rallies showed that Singaporeans do care about their political future… They want to hear what the various candidates have to offer. Photographing from this distance shows in a very basic way how much they care, because of the sheer numbers.”

Rally, Workers’ Party, 1st May, 2011

The images Soh and other Singaporean photographers made during the general elections will be published in a book, GE 2011: We Were There. Proceeds will help establish a documentary photography fund administered by the journalism school at a local university.

All photographs © Jenny J. Norris. Guards check passports at Parliament in Kiev for a Liquidators rally on March 16, 2011.

Photographer Jenny J. Norris’s images of Chernobyl “Liquidators” and developmentally disabled children born in Chernobyl following the nuclear meltdown 25 years ago, are part of an exhibition and event series taking place at the Ukrainian Institute in New York City through April 26, 2011, in remembrance of the anniversary of the disaster. The importance of the Chernobyl anniversary has been magnified by the ongoing nuclear crisis at the Fukishima power plant in Japan, and the human cost of nuclear power takes center stage in Norris’ images of men and children whose lives are marked by the difficult legacy of Chernobyl.

A young woman residing in the low dependency ward of Vesnova Mental Asylum, Chernobyl zone, Belarus.

Norris first became interested in creating a series of images about Chernobyl through her personal work teaching art and photography to children in impoverished areas around the world. She made arrangements through Chernobyl Children International to teach and make photographs at the Vesnova Mental Asylum in Belarus. Many of the children and young adults there were born in Chernobyl after the disaster, and though Norris says that staff at the asylum do not say explicitly that the developmental disabilities of the residents are radiation-related, there is an unspoken assumption. While at Vesnova, Norris showed residents how to make pictures, printing out their work for them on a portable printer she brought. “They were practically tearing the photos I gave them because they were so excited,” Norris recalls.

Vesnova Mental Asylum, Belarus. Going for a daily walk around the complex. Most children never leave the Asylum until they are 18, when they are transferred to another mental asylum for adults in the neighboring region.

A bed-ridden child that was abandoned by parents living in the Chernobyl zone. Vesnova Mental Asylum, Belarus.

A child born in the Chernobyl zone without legs and abandoned by his parents. Vesnova Mental Asylum, Belarus.

The group of more than 800,000 men who carried the burden of cleaning up the Chernobyl site are referred to as “Liquidators.” Though tens of thousands of the liquidators died within the first 10 years after the cleanup, many more live on with physical and psychological ailments, and they have struggled to get the benefits promised to them by the Soviet and subsequent governments for their sacrifice. With help from the Chernobyl Museum in Kiev, Norris made arrangements to photograph a rally the liquidators held in Kiev, and also to interview several of them about their experiences.

“Careful! Radioactive!” Liquidators of Chernobyl protesting for health benefits in Kiev. March 16th, 2011

According to Norris’ accounts of her conversations with the liquidators, a majority of the men were drafted to clean up the site, and were not told about the danger inherent in the work they were being asked to do. Many were coal miners, and they were told that their work was “going to be coal mining training,” Norris says. “They literally watched friends die in front of them from acute radiation poisoning.”

Liquidators of Chernobyl who worked on the roof near the sarcophagus, clearing highly radioactive debris from the explosion. Workers were only allowed in two minute shifts to avoid acute radiation syndrome.

Miners from the south of Ukraine drafted as liquidators describing their experiences while working in Chernobyl. “Most of our friends have died of cancer from radiation exposure.”

Norris plans to continue her project by speaking with Chernobyl survivors who now live in the New York area. “It’s a very current issue—where the sources of energy are coming from. And I think people should really question that.” Interestingly, Norris says that despite what the liquidators have been through as a result of Chernobyl, all of the men she spoke with still support nuclear energy.

Above: A young fighter of the Shabab shows his grenade on the road to the frontline near Ras Lanuf, Libya. The Shabab (meaning “youth’”) have taken part in the insurrection against the government of Muammar Qaddafi for more than a month.

Philip Poupin, a photojournalist based in Afghanistan, has covered conflict and human rights issues for six years, most recently covering the conflict in Libya from the rebels’ side. “These pictures were taken before the coalition strikes on the frontline. It was during the retreat of the Rebels before the allies decided to help them to avoid a massacre.” Now out of Libya for the time being, he writes, ” I wanted to stress the Youth who first went to the streets to chase the regime of Qaddafi,” before seizing weapons and launching civil war. Photographing the “mobile frontline” has been one of the most intense experiences of his life. “Rockets and bombs were firing around my head. I could clearly hear the whistle of the round passing by a few meters away. Two times I saw big rounds landing some 20 meters next to me but they did not explode. One landed in the sand and rebounded like a rugby ball. I have been in firefights before, like in Afghanistan and the Congo. But nothing compared with this one where both sides fight with artillery and very few with … kalashnikovs.”
