Photographer John Midgley has lived next to the Brooklyn Circus’ flagship store for the past five years. His fascination with the store’s staff, clothing and clientele inspired him to create a series of images featuring the many characters of the Brooklyn Circus. In these photographs, old meets new with the sort of whimsy and ease that can only happen in Brooklyn. All the models (and non-models) are involved with the company. It’s this sense of community that sets Midgley’s project apart from other retail campaigns.

Though Midgley began with no clear commercial goals in mind, his pictures soon appeared in the store’s windows and in several small advertisements. He and the creatives at Brooklyn Circus now hope to publish a photography book of the series.

Texas photographer and bicycle enthusiast Brent Humphreys’ Le Tour is an ambient photo study of the Tour de France. The most prestigious road bicycle race in the world, the Tour de France covers an average of 3500k and a vertical climb of the Alps and Pyrenees equivalent to three Mt. Everests. Riders will consume and burn as much as 10,000 calories per day. Le Tour shows both the grueling competition and vibrant, multinational culture of the race. In the hours before the race’s pass, a carnival atmosphere prevails as spectators nap, picnic, and socialize, waiting to catch a fleeting glimpse of the colorful circus on wheels. Mr. Humphrey’s is an award-winning Austin based photographer, whose career began as a teenager with a BMX racing bicycle and his mother’s 35mm camera. Since then, he has attended the Tour de France every summer since 2004. His editorial work can be seen regularly in the pages of The New York Times, Texas Monthly, and Wired magazines.

Humphreys’ photo exhibition, Le Tour, is currently on view at the Clark | Oshin gallery.

Texas based photographer, Tom Hussey reflects on his recent collaboration with the pharmaceutical company, Novartis for their ”Reflections” campaign.

”Based on an earlier portfolio image, I was awarded a job for an Alzheimer’s drug called the Exelon Patch made by Novartis. The Exelon Patch helps patients maintain long-term memories during the early stages of this horrific disease. I was fortunate to be included in a lot of the early concept stages for the campaign. I knew immediately location scouting and casting were going to be very important to evoke the emotions associated with the disease. The campaign has been extremely successful for the promotion of the brand and people universally respond to the images. After we shot the campaign, the images went into testing and legal review. They were so well received that the images, all 10 of them, were printed full page in the brochures and other collateral.” -Tom Hussey

Tom Hussey’s compelling photography has recently been featured in Communication Arts 2010 Photography Annual. To view more of his work click here.

The enthusiasm and passion with which soccer is played in Africa are inevitably transferred to the onlooker. Internationally successful fashion and advertising photographer Thomas Hoeffgen (*1968 in Kiel) experienced the same thing when he flew to Nigeria in 1999 for a story on soccer. He became so interested in the subject that he spent the next several years taking unusual, direct photographs of players and spectators in Nigeria, Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, and South Africa. Hoeffgen’s images take us from the continent’s typical improvised sandlots with their two wooden posts forming a makeshift goal to the concrete stadiums in the city with their floodlights and grandstands. Remarkably honest photographs, since no one takes notice of the man behind the camera—the only thing that counts here is the game.
“I’ve been wanting to shoot some personal work of drag racing, and I was lucky enough to land a couple media passes for a big event at the local strip a few weeks ago. My friend Steve and I donned green photo vests, doubled up on the ear protection, and hauled the Profoto kit to the starting line to go breathe some nitro fuel vapors, eat tiny bits of rubber, and witness massive amounts of fuel consumption. (About 30 gallons in 7 seconds for the jet cars)

I never have seen or heard anything like this before, let alone being five feet away from some truly terrifying cars. When the first nitro dragster took off, I nearly threw my camera down and ran away, screaming like a little girl. I thought I was having a heart attack.

The jet cars are equally ridiculous, and there is no way to really explain the sheer insanity of strapping four wheels and a seat to a JET ENGINE.” To see more of Jamie Kripke’s work click here

Photographer Yassine Ouhilal, known as “Yazzy,” recently traveled to Norway’s Arctic Circle for a surfing expedition feature with Outside magazine. In Norway, Yazzy was also able to shoot for Eddie Bauer, who sponsored the trip. He produced a documentary while traveling that is posted on YouTube, and which has been seen in 200 countries.

The dark rocks and vegetation of Iceland’s interior absorb heat, unlike ice and snow, which would normally reflect it back to the atmosphere. This is a contributing factor in the increased global temperatures.
