“After a long and heavy winter of photographing skiing and snowboarding for my clients in Lake Tahoe, CA, I traveled to Yellowstone National Park to shoot some personal work,” says photographer Rachid Dahnoun, who is based in South Lake Tahoe. “With the recent record snowfall out west, Lower Yellowstone Falls was literally bursting at the seams. My goal with my photography is to create powerful imagery from a unique perspective that draws the viewer into the frame, giving them the feeling that they are standing right next to me.”
Dahnoun, a landscape and adventure sports photographer, is represented by Aurora Photos.

Elijah Gowin has transgressed one of the most basic rules of photography in his latest series, “Into the Sun.” Shooting into the sun is a way of courting blindness, but it’s also a daring way to confront the source of the force and power of the center of our solar system. His exhibit “Into the Sun” is on display through October 22 at the Robert Mann Gallery in New York City.
Gowin, who received a John S. Guggenheim Fellowship in 2008, is currently associate professor in the department of art and art history at University of Missouri-Kansas City. Critic Lyle Rexer has written, “Elijah Gowin is the prophet of this longing, the diviner of such dreams. His work confronts the impenetrability of the world and the challenge of representing it.”

Belgium based photographer Brigitte Grignet started photographing the remote archipelago of Chiloé (Chile) after the tower of the church of Chonchi fell and flattened her rental car in 2002. Grignet says, she was “adopted by a family and ended up returning again and again, collecting stories of an island that believes in ghost ships, witches, God, and the power of community. Chiloé is a land of rainbows and potatoes—a place where church towers help fishermen come home.” Grignet’s Chiloé-La Cruz del Sur project recently won an Aaron Siskind Foundation Grant.

In 2009, Mathias Braschler and Monika Fischer traveled to sixteen countries around the world, taking photographs of and conducting interviews with people whose existence is threatened by the consequences of climate change. One of the greatest floods in the history of his region destroyed the home and business owned by Yang Gengbao and his wife in the Chinese province of Guangxi. The drying up of Lake Chad means that Abakar Maydocou Mahamat can no longer earn his livelihood as a fisherman. Margaret Aliurtuq Nickerson from western Alaska will soon have to leave her village, Newtok, since the ground is thawing, causing homes and streets to sink. Braschler and Fischer’s new book, The Human Face of Climate Change published by Hatje Cantz, will be released this Fall in the US. The project will also travel in exhibition form to the Bermuda National Gallery in Hamilton, Bermuda and Coalmine Fotogalerie in Winterthur, Switzerland.

Photographer John Midgley has lived next to the Brooklyn Circus’ flagship store for the past five years. His fascination with the store’s staff, clothing and clientele inspired him to create a series of images featuring the many characters of the Brooklyn Circus. In these photographs, old meets new with the sort of whimsy and ease that can only happen in Brooklyn. All the models (and non-models) are involved with the company. It’s this sense of community that sets Midgley’s project apart from other retail campaigns.
Though Midgley began with no clear commercial goals in mind, his pictures soon appeared in the store’s windows and in several small advertisements. He and the creatives at Brooklyn Circus now hope to publish a photography book of the series.
