Souto’s “The End of the Trail” series is on exhibition this fall at Smack Mellon Gallery, 92 Plymouth Street at Washington Street, Brooklyn, New York. The show runs from September 26 to November 8. An opening reception is Saturday, September 26 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Furunishi’s work is the inaugural exhibition in “New Pictures,” a semi-annual series of work by emerging photographers at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Born in Japan and living in Los Angeles, Furunishi uses a 4 x 5 camera to shoot images of a particular geographical site from multiple perspectives, which she digitally stitches together into what appears to be a continuous landscape.
The show runs from September 17 to January 30, 2010, at MIA, 2400 Third Avenue South in Minneapolis. More information here.

Above: As sure as moonrise over Possession Island, king penguins gather each year for “ecstatic display.” Puffing their chests, lifting their heads, and belting out calls, birds of both sexes advertise themselves. Before long, pairs form and join a crowd, and breeding season is on. |

Planetary nebula NGC 6302, commonly known as the Bug Nebula or Butterfly Nebula. NGC 6302 lies within the Milky Way, roughly 3,800 light-years from Earth in the constellation Scorpius. The glowing gas is the star’s outer layers, expelled over about 2,200 years.
Each of these Hubble images is a composite of separate monochromatic exposures of narrow wavelength ranges. The colors result from assigning different hues to each wavelength range. NASA released these images on September 9, 2009, to show off the capabilities of the Hubble Space Telescope’s Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3), which astronauts installed during a servicing mission last May.
