Pictures Of The Year International (Five Photos)

The 2009 Pictures Of The Year International (POYi) awards presentation and exhibition opening take place this weekend at the Annenberg Space For Photography in Los Angeles. The award winners will be honored in a ceremony on Saturday. The exhibition, which runs through November 1, 2009, will feature a digital presentation of the best work from the competition.

ok if theres going to be an internation section use every country not just one ok. Don’t get me wrong I do like seeing pics from other countries but when do we ever see pics from germany ireland poland or any of those countries

The photos are from Dehli (India), Kenya, Kwanza (Angola, IIRC), Dominican Republic and Pakistan, respectively. That’s 5 photos from 5 different countries on three different continents. It sure would make for a lot more photos if the editors “use[d] every country not just one ok”, 190 more actually.

Okay… I know, very little about these photos….. but, is it just me or does the guy in the tear gas shot look like he was deep etched and placed in the shot? I know it is likely he wasn’t but it sure looks that way to me.

Why can the good parts of various Countries be portrayed ? Afterall, there are better places to take snaps of. Focus on i.e. Wheat farms , or cotton, or petroleum from these countries. Look at the positives of a Country not Negative. I should say developed Countries gain i.e. Technologically from developing countries. Hence enable your optimistic eye next.

Paul, I see what you’re seeing. But I grabbed the rendition and looked for other weird artifacts of post-processing. The only things I could find looked as though the unsharp filter was inexpertly applied. If this is something that’s placed in another shot, the edges of the inset should show artifacts when zoomed way in. I don’t see those artifacts. It *may* be, but I consider it not likely.

Nice pics especially the last one. I really prefer photos that don’t play the “developing country trife”. Far overdone, rather than showing povery and corruption in the world, why not show joy and elation.

Dark skined :-) like it, the term is black as I’m constantly told by black people I fail to address as anything other then black. Anyway the poster is correct, if it’s a photo comp then surely you should choose a wide range of situations not just “poor black or opressed black people” It’s a very big world you know. I bet Norway, Spain and even the rich people of India take a nice photo.
I wouldn’t vote for any of these, they lack invention, pick almost any magazine up from the 60s and 70s and you’ll see the same images trying to pull on heart strings.
