Give Peace A Chance (Five Photos)

All photos by Gerry Deiter, from a new book, Give Peace a Chance, John & Yoko’s Bed-in for Peace 1969, www.peaceworksnow.com

Deiter’s photos of John Lennon and Yoko Ono will be displayed in a special exhibition from May 26 to June 2, 2009 at Stephen Bulger Gallery, 1026 Queen Street West, Toronto, Ontario.

The show, “Give Peace A Chance,” marks the 40th anniversary of Lennon and Ono’s historic Bed-in For Peace at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal in May 1969. The gallery will remain open 24 hours a day for eight days.

This show in Toronto coincides with an exhibition in Lennon’s hometown of Liverpool, United Kingdom, at the Beatles Story Museum. In June, the series will also travel to the Museum at Bethel Woods, the site of the famous Woodstock Festival.

Deiter was assigned by LIFE magazine to photograph Lennon and Ono during their protest against America’s involvement in the Vietnam War. Deiter’s photographs were never published in LIFE, but were filed away until 2001, when Deiter decided to exhibit them for the first time. Deiter died in 2005 at age 72.
